What are the CICS (UCRS) Authorization Level Codes?
If you need to find out what CICS (UCRS) Authorization Level Codes you can assign to you and your staff, please consult the authorization level summary.
What hours are UCRS systems (CICS) open?
The UCRS System (CICS) hours are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Mondays to Fridays and 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM Saturdays. The exception to this rule is the night of the monthly Payroll update when the UCRS System will come down at 5:00 PM and will come back up at 8:00 AM the next morning. Please consult your "Checkwrite Schedule" calendars for the night of the monthly Payroll update, which is marked there as "Unit Values, Monthly Update," or click on System Checkwrite Schedules for an online version of the "Checkwrite Schedule." (The UCRS System is not available on Sundays since this time is reserved by IR&C for maintenance).
What do MVS, VM, and CICS stand for?
The UCOP Information Resources and Communications (IR&C) Data Center is in charge of the UCOP mainframe systems. They (IR&C) have two main operating systems in their mainframe:
- MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) and
- VM (Virtual Machine)
On the MVS side, they run CICS (Customer Information Control System) based applications such as the "UCRS System," which consists of the old Membership system (MEM), Annuitant Payment System (ANN), and Insurance system (INS). CICS is merely a generic term and the UCOP IR&C Data Center also runs other such applications for Payroll.
On the VM side, they run applications such as the Benefits Counseling System (BCS) which the Benefits Representatives (BR) at each of the campuses/labs use, and which is also used by internal staff in our UCOP HR and Benefits Department. Some users also access the Corporate Personnel System (CPS).
Through the years, people have gotten these terms mixed up. To make it simple, if someone refers to MVS or VM, they are talking about mainframe systems and not client/server or web systems. To further simplify, think of it as follows:
MVS = CICS or UCRS or MEM or ANN or INS or mainframe
VM = BCS or CPS or mainframe
